Etching is the generic name we use for Intaglio or Gravure print. Intaglio - line is cut (incised) into a metal plate to hold ink.

Etching these lines with acid is the technique often used hence the name. there are other intaglio prints such
engravings,
dry points, mezzotints or aqua tints.

Most contemporary intaglio prints are a combination of two or more of these graphic techniques.

A. make preliminary sketch
B. Heat the plate and roll on a hand ground (acid resist) to protect the metal.
C. Use an etchers needle to draw throught the ground to expose the metal.
D. Place the plate in an acid bath which will etch the exposed metal.
E. After rinsing off the acid and removing the ground, rub ink into the incised lines.
F. Wipe the surface clean with tarletin (starched cheesecloth) while leaving ink in the lines.
G. Place the plate on the press, cover with dampened acid-free paper, then lower the felt blankets and roll through the press.
H. Check the quality of the print and admire the results.
